I didn't know Chris well - we used to bump into him at jazz events, mainly - so was somewhat surprised and entirely delighted when he turned up to see a play I was in which I'd mentioned in passing, and took the trouble to stay on afterwards to say he'd enjoyed it. I remember him as radiating enthusiasm, warmth, liveliness, interest - a cheery and generous spirit in a world in need of all the cheer and generosity it can get.
